  • Description

THE CRUISE LINER "YARMOUTH CASTLE" SANK THIS MORNING (SATURDAY) AFTER BURNING FIERCELY FOR SIX HOUSE NEAR THE BAHAMAS. THE VESSEL WAS ON A JOURNEY FROM NASSAU IN THE BAHAMAS TO MIAMI IN FLORIDA. THERE WERE 550 PEOPLE ON BOARD. NINETY OF THEM ARE UNACCOUNTED FOR. THE REMAINDER HAVE BEEN PICKED UP BY THE OTHER VESSELS, OR HAVE BEEN FLOWN TO FLORIDA FOR MEDICAL ATTENTION. FILM OF THE RESCUE LINERS IN THE SEA WAS RELAYED TO LONDON BY WAY OF THE ATLANTIC CABLE.

THE LINER DID NOT RADIO A DISTRESS CALL AFTER BURSTING INTO FLAMES - BUT TWO NEARBY SHIPS, THE "BAHAMAS STAR" AND THE FINNISH FREIGHTER "FINNPULP", WERE QUICKLY ON THE SCENE. THEY RESCUED A LARGE NUMBER OF PASSENGER FROM THE SEA - AND OTHERS FROM LIFEBOATS. SOME HAD SUFFERED SEVERE BURNS, AND COAST-GUARD HELICOPTERS FROM MIAMI FERRIED THEM TO HOSPITALS ON THE MAINLAND.

THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE ABOARD THE 5,000 TON FORMER TROOPSHIP REMAINS A MYSTERY. SURVIVORS REACHING MIAMI SPEAK OF BEING WOKEN BY CRIES OF "FIRE" AND LEAVING THEIR CABINS TO FIND THE SHIP BLAZING. THE VESSEL WENT DOWN IN 300 FATHOMS OF WATER AT DAWN, AFTER BURNING TO THE WATERLINE.

COASTGUARD HELICOPTER PILOTS GAVE VIVID DESCRIPTIONS OF THE BURNING VESSEL. ONE SAID THAT THE FLAMES AND SMOKE WERE RISING FOUR THOUSANDS FEET ABOVE THE SEA.

THROUGHOUT THE DAY, RESCUE VESSELS AND HELICOPTERS HAVE CRISS-CROSSED THE AREA WHERE THE STRICKEN VESSEL WENT DOWN. THEY FEAR THAT THEY WILL FIND FEW SURVIVORS AND AUTHORITIES BELIEVE THAT THOSE STILL MISSING MAY HAVE BEEN CARRIED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN IN THE CHARRED WRECKAGE OF THE LINER.
