  • Description

More than 500 members of the All India Student's Congress marched through the streets of New Delhi yesterday (Tuesday) in protest against the British Broadcasting Corporation and the British Government's policy of South African arms sales. The student demonstrators shouted slogans and carried banners proclaiming: "Down with Anti-Indian BBC".

The students grievances against he BBC arose from a series of documentary programmes made in India by French film director Louis Malle. As a result of the programmes the BBC office in New Delhi has been closed.

The students called for even harsher action against the BBC and also took the opportunity of protesting against the British Government's "racialist" policies in South Africa.

The demonstrators marched en masse to the British High Commission in New Delhi where they handed in a petition and shouted more slogans.

Later they burned a cut-out figure representing British imperialism in effigy.
