  • Description

There was tragedy at Nagoya airport, Japan, March 16, when an F-86 jet fighter collided as it was taking off with a DC-3 airliner, which had just landed. Three people were killed instantly - the stewardess of the airliner and two passengers - a young couple on their honeymoon. Both pilots had a miraculous escape.

Fire-fighters rushed to the scene as the wreckage of the two planes was enveloped in flame. While the fire was brought under control, rescue workers salvaged luggage and other passengers' belongings from the airliner. Police and airport officials held back reporters and cameramen and the crowds which soon gathered at the scene.

The F-86 - of the Japanese Air Self-Defence Corps - was given the all-clear to take-off before the airliner had taxied off the runway. Afterwards police took possession of tape recordings of control tower instructions, and questioned a 29-year-old controller-trainee, on duty at the time of the crash.
