  • Description

THERE IS STILL NO SIGN OF ANY SETTLEMENT IN THE STRIKE OF 240,000 FRENCH COAL MINERS, WHICH IS NOW IN ITS FOURTH WEEK. THE MINERS HAVE STOPPED WORK IN SUPPORT OF DEMANDS FOR HIGHER WAGES, BETTER PENSIONS AND A SHORTER WORKING WEEK.

REPORTS FROM COAL FIELDS IN NORTHERN AND EASTERN FRANCE YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) SAID THAT ANGER WAS MOUNTING AMONG THE STRIKING COALMINERS. MEANWHILE, BELGIAN WORKERS ARE ALSO GIVING THEIR SUPPORT. YESTERDAY, A CONVOY OF 23 TRUCKS, LOADED WITH BREAD, WAS SENT TO THE BORDER POST AT BAISIEUX.

ALTOGETHER, THERE WERE 20,000 LOAVES, DONATED BY MEMBERS OF BELGIAN TRADE UNIONS, WHICH WERE LOADED ON TO ALL AVAILABLE FRENCH VEHICLES - CARS, STATION WAGONS AND TRUCKS. THE BREAD WAS TAKEN TO THE MINING REGIONS AROUND LENS AND BETHUNE FOR DISTRIBUTION AMONG THE STRIKING MINERS.

IN THE FRENCH TOWN OF ANZUN, LOCAL SHOP KEEPERS ARE ALSO HELPING THE MINERS. MANY HAVE DISPLAYED THE NOTICE - "AIDE AUX MINEURS" - WHICH MEANS THAT THE SHOP OWNERS WILL GIVE CREDIT TO THE FAMILIES OF STRIKING MINERS SO THAT THEY CAN BUY FOOD.

IN THE AFTERNOON, A MASS MEETING AT ANZUN WAS ATTENDED BY ABOUT 12,000 PEOPLE, INCLUDING MANY WOMEN.
