  • Description

Visnews filmed the last two of Algeria's three-day polling to send 67 Deputies to the Paris Parliament.

Forty-six of them were Moslems. Thus for the first time Moslem representatives outnumber the European representatives for Algeria.

The election methods were not without criticism. When the recent referendum showed an 83 per cent Moslem vote in Algeria for de Gaulle's Fifth Republic Constitution, critics remarked it would have been more honest to have shown a 75 per cent return.

This time, further criticism was raised: opposition politicians in France and foreign newsmen reported again there was official and army interference; but most conceded the task was a difficult one - most voters were ignorant of the issues, most were voting for the first time, in particular the women, and many were illiterate.

Latest reports said some 68 per cent of Moslems voted - the drop in the percentage being due to apathy and bad weather - but that most were for de Gaulle.
