  • Description

A young gunman was shot and killed by a police marksman on Wednesday after hijacking a ferryboat with 21 passengers and 15 crew aboard in waters near Hiroshima.

The youth, 20-old Nobuhisa Kawafuji, had used an arsenal of two rifles, a shotgun and a stolen police pistol to commandeer the 177-ton ferryboat near Ujina. A police officer and one bystander were wounded in a spray of gunfire as the ferry pulled away from the quay.

Kawafuji took his terrified captives on a 50-mile (80 kms) ride to the ferry's other terminal, Matsuyama. He allowed the craft the refuel, and all but seven crew to leave the vessel.

He then set sail for Hiroshima, where police demanded he surrender. Television cameras transmitted the drama live to millions of viewers all around Japan.

The gunman waved his arms and shouted defiantly at the police, making no attempt to take cover. Suddenly, a single shot range out, and he fell back, badly wounded in the chest by a police marksman's bullet.

Despite an emergency operation, kawafuji died an hour later from his wounds. Police said he had been demanding freedom for a 19-year-old friend arrested the morning before on a stolen car charge. Kawafuji himself had eluded arrest, allegedly stabbing a policeman in the process.
