  • Description

IN CYPRUS, A TURKISH SHIP "HASSAN YORUK" ARRIVED AT FAMUGUSTA HARBOUR YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) BRINGING 200 TONS OF SUPPLIES FOR TURKISH-CYPRIOTS IN KOKKINA. UN TROOPS MOVED IN TO GUARD THE VESSEL FROM POSSIBLE GREEK-CYPRIOT REACTION, BUT THERE WERE NO DEMONSTRATIONS.

GREEK CYPRIOT POLICE PATROLS INSPECTED THE "HASSAN YORUK" BEFORE IT WAS PERMITTED TO ENTER HARBOUR. THEY EXAMINED THE CARGO OF MIXED FOODSTUFF SPONSORED BY THE TURKISH RED CRESCENT ORGANISATION. THE SUPPLIES WILL BE DISCHARGED TODAY AND SENT TO THE AREA AROUND THE BELEAGUERED VILLAGE OF KOKKINA IN NORTH-WEST CYPRUS FOR DISTRIBUTION TO VILLAGERS AND REFUGEES.

THE TURKISH GOVERNMENT'S SPOKESMAN ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS, MR. ERKIN, REFERRED YESTERDAY TO THE GREEK CYPRIOT DECISION TO EASE THE ECONOMIC BLOCKADE OF THE TURKISH-CYPRIOT COMMUNITY: "THE FACT THAT PRESIDENT MAKARIOS HAD TO DO THIS IS CLEAR PROOF THAT OPPRESSION OF THE TURKISH COMMUNITY EXISTED, AS WE HAVE ALWAYS POINTED OUT".
