  • Description

THE WORLD'S FIRST NUCLEAR FREIGHTER, THE AMERICAN SHIP SAVANNAH, DOCKED AT BREMERHAVEN TODAY (THURSDAY) ON THE FIRST STAGE OF A FRIENDSHIP VISIT TO EUROPEAN PORTS.

THE 13,559-TOM ATOMIC-POWERED SHIP GOT A DISTINGUISHED WELCOME AT THIS WEST GERMAN PORT ON THE NORTH SEA. AMONG THE CROWD AT THE QUAYSIDE WERE PROFESSOR OTTO HAHN, THE NOBEL PRIZE-WINNER FOR PHYSICS, THE WEST GERMAN TRANSPORT MINISTER, HERR BOHM, THE AMERICAN AMBASSADOR TO WEST GERMANY, MR. GEORGE C. MCGHEE, AND ADMIRAL JOHN WILL, CHIEF OF THE SHIPPING LINE WHICH OPERATES THE SAVANNAH UNDER LICENCE FROM THE WASHINGTON GOVERNMENT.

IN ADDITION TO BEING THE WORLD'S FIRST NUCLEAR FREIGHTER, THE SAVANNAH LATER THIS YEAR WILL ALSO BECOME THE WORLD'S FIRST SUCH SHIP TO CARRY PASSENGERS. SHE WILL BE JOINING THE TRANSATLANTIC WINTER CRUISE SEASON.

COSTING GBP26 MILLION, SHE CAN CARRY 60 PASSENGERS AND A CARGO OF 9,400 TONS. HER MASTER IS CAPTAIN DAVID B. MCMICHAEL, A 51-YEAR-OLD VETERAN WHO JOINED THE SAVANNAH SOON AFTER SHE WAS LAUNCHED IN 1959.

THE SAVANNAH'S ARRIVAL CAME ONLY FIVE DAYS AFTER EUROPE'S FIRST NUCLEAR SHIP - ALSO A FREIGHTER - WAS LAUNCHED FROM THE NEARBY PORT OF KIEL. THE MAN WHOM SHE WAS NAMED AFTER IS OTTO HAHN.

REFERENCES TO THE WEST GERMAN FREIGHTER WERE MADE IN THE WELCOMING SPEECHES. AFTERWARDS, THE OFFICIAL PARTY MADE A TOUR OF THE SLEEK, WHITE-PAINTED VESSEL.

ALL HER POWER IS GENERATED BY A REACTOR WHICH COULD BE DESCRIBED AS SIMPLY AND ATOMIC FURNACE. PASSENGERS AND CREW ARE IN NO DANGER, AS THE REACTOR IS ENCLOSED WITHIN SIX INCHES OF STEEL.

AND IF YOU WANT TO MAKE A TRIP IN HER, MOST TRAVEL AGENTS CAN ARRANGE THINGS.
