  • Description

A STUDENT WAS KILLED AND 750 POLICE AND STUDENTS WERE INJURED WHEN ABOUT 2,000 LEFT-WING STUDENTS BATTLED WITH POLICE FOR ABOUT FOUR HOURS NEAR TOKYO AIRPORT YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) -- JAPAN'S WORST RIOT FOR SEVEN YEARS. THE STUDENTS WANTED TO BLOCK THE AIRPORT RUNWAY AND PREVENT THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. EISAKU SATU, FROM LEAVING ON A SOUTH EAST ASIAN TOUR THAT WILL INCLUDE SOUTH VIETNAM.

THE BATTLE TOOK PLACE ON THE APPROACHES TO TOKYO'S HANEDA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, WITH THE STUDENTS THROWING HUGE STONES AND WIELDING SHARPENED BAMBOO STAKES IN AN EFFORT TO PIERCE A BARRIER OF POLICE GUARDING THE AIRPORT. THE POLICE RESPONDED WITH PRESSURE HOSES AND TEAR GAS. AT THE HEIGHT OF THE STRUGGLE AT LEAST 10 OF THE CHANTING, YELLING STUDENTS FELL HEADLONG INTO A NEARBY RIVER.

THE STUDENTS SET FIR TO SIX POLICE CARS, AND OF THOSE INJURED ABOUT 660 WERE POLICEMEN. THE STUDENTS ARMOURED TRUCK "COMMANDEERED" BY ANOTHER STUDENT. THE STUDENTS OBSERVED A MINUTE'S SILENT TRUCE AND THEN RESUMED THE BATTLE WITH GREATER FEROCITY. THE POLICE ONLY USED THEIR TEAR GAS, AND FINALLY BROKE UP THE RIOT, WHEN ALL ELSE HAD FAILED -- THE FIRST TIME THEY'VE HAD TO RESORT TO TEAR GAS IN SEVEN YEARS.

MR. SATO LEFT THE AIRPORT ON SCHEDULE AND WAS INFORMED OF THE STUDENT'S DEATH ONLY WHEN HE ARRIVED IN DJAKARTA. FROM INDONESIA HE'LL GO ON TO AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND AND OTHER SOUTH EAST ASIAN COUNTRIES, ENDING HIS 15-DAY TOUR WITH A VISIT TO SOUTH VIETNAM. HIS PLANNED 24 HOURS IN SAIGON HAS STIRRED UP HEATED POLITICAL CONTROVERSY IN JAPAN. SOCIALISTS CLAIM IT POINTS UP MR. SATO'S INCREASING BACKING FOR UNITED STATES POLICIES IN VIETNAM.
