Background: Egyptian Army officers wounded in the October war, were decorated by President Anwar Sadat at a ceremony in Cairo on Thursday (9 May). The President late went on to a meeting with the U.S. Secretary of State. Dr. Kissinger, for more talks on ending the fighting which continues on the Golan Heights between Israel and Syria.
Dressed in the uniform of Supreme Commander, the President distributed the orders and decorations at Maadi Military Hospital. The officers were all injured on the 6th October -- the first day of the war when the Egyptians crossed the Suez Canal to the Israel i occupied East Bank. and the Sinai.
Among the decorations the President awarded was the Star of Sinai, the Star of Military Honour, the Military Star, the Order of the Republic and the Order of Valour and Duty.
SYNOPSIS: President Anwar Sadat of Egypt paid tribute to the men who were injured in the October war, at a special ceremony in Cairo on Thursday. The ceremony was held at Maadi Military Hospital, and began with a recital of verses from the Koran.
Senior Armed Forces commanders received the president. Several senior politicians were also among the guests.
The war is still very much on President Sadat's mind. Immediately after the ceremony he rove to a nearby building for a meeting with the U.S. Secretary of State, Dr. Kissinger. The meeting was the third round of their negotiations in an attempt to secure a troop disengagement between Syria and Israel on the Golan Heights.
Egypt agreed to a disengagement with Israel in January, but disengagement on the Golan Heights is generally recognised as more difficult.
Sadat at Armed Forces Maadi fete today
TO GIVE ORDERS DECORATIONS
PRESIDENT ANWAR EL SADAT and Mrs. Sadat will attend this evening the armed Forces celebration held in honour of the October war wounded at Maadi Hospital.
The President will give the wounded orders and decorations. He will also attend the soiree after the ceremony.
The ceremony will begin with a recital of verses form the Holy Koran. A wounded officer will then give a speech on behalf on his fellow officers after which a soldier will also speak on behalf of his comrades.
Field-Marshal Ahmed Ismall, Deputy Premier and Minister of War will then deliver a speech on behalf of the Armed Forces. The President will then distribute order and decorations to the wounded who will remain seated. He will later give a speech greeting the heroes of the October war.
The order and decorations include the Star of Sinai, the Star of Military Honour, the Military Star, Order of the Republic and the Order of Valour and Duty.
The celebration will be attended by the two Vice Presidents, the Deputy Prime Ministers and the Ministers and their wives.
President and Mrs. Sadat will be received at the hospital by Field Marshal Ismall and his wife, and the senior Armed Forces commanders and their wives. -GSS
