  • Description

MOHAMMED GAMMOUDI, TUNISIA'S STAR DISTANCE RUNNER, COMPLETED A GRAND GOLD MEDAL DOUBLE WHEN HE WON THE 5,000 METRES IN THE PRE-OLYMPICS MEETING AT MEXICO CITY ON THURSDAY (OCTOBER 19).

GAMMOUDI HAD ALSO WON THE 10,000 METRES ON THE OPENING DAY OF THE "LITTLE" OLYMPICS. HIS TWO GREAT WINS WERE COMPENSATION FOR HIS DISAPPOINTMENT LAST YEAR WHEN HE WAS SECOND ON EACH OCCASION TO COLOMBIA'S ALVARO MEJIA.

GAMMOUDI, RUNNING EASILY AND CONFIDENTLY THROUGHOUT, HELD OFF A TERRIFIC CHALLENGE BY WEST GERMANY'S MANFRED LETZERICH AND MEXICO'S JUAN MAXIMI MARTINEZ, TO WIN BY TEN YARDS (METRES).

THE TUNISIAN FLASHED THROUGH THE TAPE TO WIN IN 14 MINUTES 14 SECONDS. ONLY INCHES (CMS) SEPARATED THE NEXT TWO RUNNERS.

GAMMOUDI DIDN'T SEEM TO BE IN THE SLIGHTEST DIFFICULTY AFTER HIS RUN IN THE THIN AIR ALTITUDE OF MEXICO CITY.

BUT HIS TIME WAS MUCH SLOWER THAT THE LISTED WORLD RECORD OF 13 MINUTES 24 SECONDS HELD BY KEINO OF KENYA. "IT WAS NOT A BAD RACE," SAID GAMMOUDI -- AND BLAMED THE ALTITUDE, NOT THE COMPETITION, FOR HIS SLOW TIME.
