  • Description

FRANCE'S NEWEST AND FASTEST TRAIN, A 145MPH TURBINE-POWERED TRAIN MADE ITS FIRST RUN YESTERDAY FOR THE PRESS AND SPECIAL GUESTS. THE MAIDEN JOURNEY WAS BETWEEN PARIS AND CANNES.

THE TWO-CARRIAGE TRAIN HAS CUT 40 MINUTES FROM THE 2 1/2 HOUR JOURNEY TO CANNES AND REGULAR SERVICE WILL BE EXTENDED TO CHERBOURG NEXT SUMMER.

THE TURBO TRAIN WAS IN DEVELOPMENT STAGES FOR FOUR YEARS AND EXPERIMENTAL MODELS HAVE LOGGED MORE THAN 96,000 MILES DURING TEST RUNS. ALTHOUGH IT HAS REACHED 145 MILES PER HOUR, IT'S NORMAL SPEED ON THE PARIS-CANNES ROUTE WILL BE 112MPH. IT IS HOPED THAT LATER VERSIONS WILL BE CAPABLE OF 180 MPH.

THE TRAIN WITH 192 SEATS WAS DEVELOPED TO PROVIDE FASTER AND MORE COMFORTABLE SERVICE TO AN EVER-INCREASING NUMBER OF FRENCHMEN USING RAIL TRANSPORT.
