  • Description

THOUSANDS OF VILLAGERS ARE HOMELESS FOLLOWING WIDESPREAD FLOODING IN WESTERN NIGERIA THIS WEEK. TORRENTIAL RAINS CAUSED THE ALREADY SWOLLEN OGUN RIVER TO BURST ITS BANKS, SENDING FLOOD WATERS SURGING THROUGH ABEOKUTA.

ABOUT 80 HOUSES IN THE TOWNSHIP WERE SWEPT AWAY, AND AT THE NEARBY VILLAGE OF ARO, 150 PEOPLE -- MOSTLY FARMERS -- LOST THEIR HOUSES ALONG WITH PERSONAL BELONGINGS.

A MOSQUE IN THE VILLAGE WAS ALSO SEVERELY FLOODED. CROP LOSSES ARE HEAVY AND ABOUT 60 MILES (95 KILOMETRES) OF RAILWAY TRACK HAVE BEEN WASHED AWAY.

NO LOSS OF LIFE HAS BEEN REPORTED SO FAR. AN EMERGENCY COMMITTEE, SET UP BY EGBA ECONOMIC COUNCIL, IS ORGANISING RELIEF AID FOR THE FLOOD VICTIMS.
