SYNOPSIS: The First of May in the Arab Republic, as in many parts of the world, is celebrated as May Day - the day of the workers. President Sadat was in Helwan, where he opened a fertilisation factory and addressed a May Day rally.

The workers were in a holiday mood for May Day. They'll be working in the new factory, which was built in cooperation with West Germany, at a cost of 19 million sterling.

Several thousand workers heard their President reiterate his latest position vis-a-vis the conflict with Israel. President Sadat said that Egypt would accept no peace settlement that included an Israeli presence in Sinai....and he insisted that Egyptian troops must cross the Suez canal, if the waterway was to be cleared.

President Sadat also renewed his offer to accept a further limited ceasefire if Egypt's terms for reopening the canal were accepted....this would pave the way for the United Nations envoy,. Gunnar Jarring, to draw up a timetable for complete Israeli withdrawal. To great applause, he said that Egypt would accept to Israeli at Sharm el Sheikh, in any shape or form. While striving to find a political settlement, Egypt would not settle for anything less than complete withdrawal, President Sadat said.
