  • Description

Following the wedding of Japanese Crown Prince Akihito to commoner Michiko Shoda, 10 April 1959, twenty-one year-old Princess Suga, Emperor Hirohito's youngest daughter, married twenty-five year-old bank clerk Hisanaga Shimazu in Tokyo, Japan, Mar 10. She is thus the fourth Japanese princess to become a commoner.

The marriage, at Karinkatu state guest house, was in traditional Japanese style, to the sound of ancient musical instruments. Bride and group sipped cups of sake - rice wine, as part of ritual wedding vows, and the Meiji shrine's chief priest officiated at age-old Shinyo ceremonies. Princess Suga, highly westernised in outlook, nevertheless wore a "keiko" - the brocaded, multi-coloured gown of Imperial weddings for centuries, and carried a ceremonial fan.

After the wedding she changed into a cocktail dress and went with her groom to an afternoon reception at the Kaiun Club, attended by 130 guests. There will be no honeymoon until May.

No official festivities marked the occasion, but a crowd several thousand strong gathered outside the Palace, and millions watched the televised wedding. Princess Suga is highly popular, and regarded as a typical emancipated woman of post-war Japan.

Mr. Shimazu, descended from a noble family, is a former class-mate of the Crown Prince, and earns a modest salary. His mother is a Tokyo social welfare councillor.

A dowry of GBP15000 went with the young Princess, and the imperial family gave a house in which she will live with her husband and mother-in-law.
