Background: President Mathieu Kerekou of Dahomey arrived in Lagos, Nigeria recently (Saturday, 21 April) for a one day official visit.

The Dahomeyan President was met on arrival by Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon. It was President Kerekou's first visit to Nigeria since he seized power in Dahomey last October.

After the airport ceremonies, the two leaders, accompanied by their respective aides, conferred on various issues, including the need to further economic relations between these two neighbouring West African states.

Under a recent friendship treaty, Nigeria has provided financial and technical assistance to Dahomey, totalling GBP1 million sterling (US$2 1/2 million) Nigeria has also constructed a road from Idiroko, on their common frontier, to the major Dehomeyan town of Porto Novo.
