    The Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London has been devoid of surprises so far but there was a mild upset on Saturday (29th June) when Japan's Kazuko Sawamatsu beat American Julie Heldman of Houston, Texas, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round.

    Miss. Heldman is rated one of the game's shrewdest tacticians, but she was unable to match the Japanese girl's consistency in a 75 minute encounter on the centre court. In both sets Miss. Heldman surrendered a position of strength. She was 4-2 up in the first set and then proceeded to drop four games in a row. In the second set she was 3-0 in front before allowing Miss. Sawamatsu back into the match.

    In the tenth game of the set Miss. Heldman managed to save two match points when she came back from 15-40 down, but Miss. Sawamatsu clinched her victory at the next opportunity.

    SYNOPSIS: The Japanese player, Miss. Kazuko Sawamatsu, nearest the camera, faced the American, Julie Heldman, on Saturday in the second round of the Wimbledon tennis championships in London.

    Although Miss. Heldman is regarded as one of tennis' shrewdest tacticians, it was Miss. Sawamatsu who took control with her consistency.

    Miss. Sawamatsu won the first set and went ahead in the second.

    Although Miss. Sawamatsu had been considered a complete outsider, the was suddenly on the brink of victory over the vastly more experienced Miss. Heldman.

    Although Miss. Heldman fought back to deuce in the final game, Miss. Sawamatsu's concentration never wavered.

    She served for the match and won.

    This was one of the first upsets of the tournament, but a great triumph for Miss. Sawamatsu who won her national championship st the age of sixteen.
