  • Description

At least six people were killed and 40 others injured in a series of explosions that ripped through apartment buildings in a wealthy district of Paris on Friday (17 February).

SYNOPSIS: There were three blasts occurring within 20 minutes on or near the residential Rue Rayncuard in the wealthy 16th District of Western Paris.

There were fears initially that the explosions may have been connected with the current electoral campaigns for the French elections, and that a series of acts of political violence may have followed.

However, police and firemen said after preliminary investigations that the explosions were probably caused by leaking gas.

It was not clear that if the explosion had been caused by leaking gas, what exactly had set them off. It was established that the first explosion occurred at the corner of Rue Du Colonel Bonnet and the Avenue Lamballe and spread from there.

Firemen and police sifting through the wreckage for bodies were among those injured. Thousands of local people were evacuated from the area when the explosions started including schoolchildren from nearby schools. Residents reported smelling gas in the area from as early as three o'clock in the morning and after the explosions ended, the smell of gas was reported to still be heavy.
