  • Description

MORE BRITISH TROOPS IN CYPRUS. TODAY (SATURDAY), 500 MEN OF THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S REGIMENT WERE FLOWN THERE FROM MALTA, TO REINFORCE THE BRITISH PEACE-KEEPING FORCE ON THE ISLAND WHICH HAS BEEN WORKING AT FULL STRETCH SINCE CHRISTMAS. AT THE SAME TIME, MR CLERIDES, PRESIDENT OF THE CYPRUS HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND LEADER OF THE GREEK CYPRIOT DELEGATION TO THE LONDON CONFERENCE FLEW BACK TO NICOSIA WITH OTHER MEMBERS OF HIS DELEGATION.

ALSO TODAY, BRITAIN'S PRIME MINISTER REPLIED TO MR KHRUSHCHEV'S MESSAGE CHARGING THE WEST WITH MILITARY INTERVENTION IN THE ISLAND. SIR ALEC DOUGLAS-HOME SAID THE SOVIET LEADER'S REMARKS WERE "AS OFFENSIVE AS THEY WERE UNFOUNDED". THERE WAS NO QUESTION, AS MR KHRUSHCHEV CLAIMED, OF INFRINGING THE SOVEREIGNTY, INDEPENDENCE AND FREEDOM OF A SMALL STATE. BRITAIN'S ONE OBJECT WAS TO MAINTAIN PEACE AND SECURITY IN THE ISLAND.

BEFORE LEAVING LONDON AIRPORT, MR CLERIDES GAVE THE GREEK-CYPRIOT VIEWPOINT ON MR KHRUSHCHEV'S MESSAGE IN THIS INTERVIEW.

MR CLERIDES ADDED THAT THE LONDON TALKS WERE STILL ON 'IN THEORY', BUT IN PRACTICE THERE WAS CLEARLY NO GROUND FOR AGREEMENT.

IN NEW YORK, THE UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY-GENERAL MET REPRESENTATIVES OF THE BIG FOUR POWERS SEPARATELY TO DISCUSS THE CYPRUS SITUATION. LATE TONIGHT (SATURDAY) CAME THE NEWS THAT MR GEORGE BALL, THE UNITED STATES UNDER-SECRETARY-OF-STATE, WAS FLYING TO LONDON FOR TALKS WITH THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT.
