    AT A MEETING OF THEIR UNION MAR 9, OVER 300 SOUTH AFRICAN AIRCRAFT TECHNICIANS OF THE JAN SMUTS AIRPORT, JOHANNESBURG, DECIDED TO "WORK TO THE MANUAL" - IN EFFECT: "GO SLOW". THIS DECISION OF THE ENGINEERING ASSOCIATION CAME AFTER A FIVE-YEAR STRUGGLE FOR RECOGNITION AS A TRADE UNION SEPARATE FROM THE ARTISAN STAFF ASSOCIATION OF THE RAILWAYS. THE MEETING TOOK PLACE AFTER A FINAL REJECTION OF THEIR APPEAL BY THE MINISTER OF TRANSPORT.

    ON MAR 10 THE "GO SLOW" OPERATION STARTED AT THE AIRPORT. EACH TIME A TECHNICIAN HAD TO INFLATE A TYRE OR TIGHTEN A BOLT, HE FIRST CONSULTED HIS MANUAL. THREE MEN WERE SLOWLY DOING JOBS NORMALLY TACKLED BY ONE MAN. THE ONLY RAPID MOVEMENT SEEN DURING THE DAY WAS AT THE TEA INTERVAL.

    AMONG THE IMPORTANT FLIGHTS FROM JAN SMUTS AIRPORT THAT WOULD BE AFFECTED BY THE "WORK TO MANUAL", WERE THE SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS WEEKLY SERVICE TO AUSTRALIA AND THE NEWLY INTRODUCED NON-STOP BOEING FLIGHT TO ATHENS.
