Background: A senior Zimbabwe Cabinet Minister was arrested and charged o wednesday (6 August) with the murder of a 68-year-old white man. Edgar Tekere, Minister for Manpower, Planning and Development was charged at a special court in Salisbury Central Police Station and was remanded in custody.

SYNOPSIS: Plain clothes police arrived at Mr. Tekere's home on Wednesday (6 August) morning to question him. Later Mr. Tekere came out to talk to reporters.

Two hours afterwards the police left and Mr. Tekere drove away to see relatives in another part of the capital. But later he was arrested, as were seven other people who were due to appear in court on the same murder charge. Edgar Tekere is regarded as leader of a hardline action of ZANU-PF (Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front) and is its secretary-General. Since independence Mr. Tekere has expressed impatience at Prime Minister Robert Mugabe's conciliatory attitude to Zimbabwe's white population, arguing that change was coming too slowly.

Mr. Tekere is accused of murdering farmer Gerald Adams at his homestead near Salisbury on Monday (4 August). Mr. Adams was found shot through the back and crouched over a bloodstained farm radio, after a group of armed men staged a military-type assault on Stanford Farm.

Witnesses to the attack claimed a car resembling Mr. Tekere's and another car were seen leaving the farm. Police tracked the vehicles to a residential section of the capital and heavily armed security forces surrounded the building. During a special debate after the Minister's arrest, deputy Premier Simon Muzenda assured Parliamentarians the government would not attempt to suppress evidence or interfere with the processes of justice.
