  • Description

A 25 year old French girl became a bride and a widow at the same moment in Paris November 14.

Shopgirl Monique Guengueno was married posthumously to a French airman killed in Algerta last year.

The deputy mayor Jean Dubuc performed the civil ceremony at a town hall in Central Paris, pronounced: "In the name of the law, I marry you to a shadow." Dressed in grey, weeping, she slipped on a wedding ring.

The bride was supported by the dead man's mother, also weeping. Both were in tears earlier as the deputy mayor read the law authorizing her wedding. Afterwards he said: "A cruel fate denied you the happiness that was your right."
The bride was engaged to her fiance shortly before his death. While she was expecting his child, she appealed to the French Government and a law was passed to allow posthumous marriages between French women and fiances killed in action.

The marriage was the third in France since the law was passed and the first in Paris.
