Rain and winds of up to 80 m.p.h. threatened to wreck the Nov 3 opening?
Rain and winds of up to 80 m.p.h. threatened to wreck the Nov 3 opening ceremony by the Duke of Edinburgh, of the Esso company's new GBP18 million oil refinery in Milford Haven, South Wales, UK. Before the Duke's arrival workers were going at top speed to repair damage caused by a gale which smashed the luncheon marquees.
When Duke arrived he ran into a bad squall but this did not prevent him from touring the new plant. He unveiled a bronze plaque showing a large-than-life figure of a man working on the refinery.
When in full operation the new plant will produce three and a half million gallons of fuel products per day. The refinery is considered one of the most technically advanced plants Britain.
