Background: An African Regional Meeting on the Implications of the Use of Freight Containers in African Trade began in Abbis Ababa on Wednesday (12 April). Some of the main agenda items for the week-long conference include progress to date in the use of international freight containers and a discussion to establish an african position on the use of freight containers in the next decade.

The meeting is being held in preparation for the United Nations Inter-Governmental Maritime Organisation (IMCO) Conference on International Container Traffic to be held in Geneva in November of this year.

Under the auspices of the United Nations Economic commission for Africa (ECA), all forty-one member states of the Commission have been invited to the regional meeting.
