  • Description

Latest reports from Paris state that General Maurice Challe, one of the four Generals that led the abortive four-day revolt in Algeria, surrendered to forces loyal to President De Gaulle April 26, and is now detained in Sante Prison in Paris.

VISNEWS LIBRARY film shows General Challe at his Algiers headquarters in December 1959, just twelve months after succeeding General Salan as Commander-in-Chief in Algeria, a post he held until April '60 when he was appointed Deputy Supreme Commander Allied Powers in Europe. He resigned in January this year in protest against President De Gaulle's Algerian policy.

56-year old General Challe - acknowledged as one of the most distinguished figures in the French Armed Services - introduced a new strategy and tactics that were largely responsible for achieving military supremacy over guerilla bands of the F.L.N., and it was under his command that defences in depth were completed along the Tunisian and Moroccan frontiers. The strength of his belief in a French Algeria was bound to involve him eventually in conflict with President De Gaulle's progression towards an Algerian Algeria.

As the revolt collapsed in the early hours of April 26, it was reported from Algiers that the other rebel Generals - 61-year old Raoul Salan; 63-year old Andre Zeller; and 56-year old Edmond Jouhaud - were last seen leading for the Foreign Legion base at Zeralda, some fifteen miles outside Algiers.
