Background: The NVA sampan was cap???ized by the navy's PBR quito by account ??? the sampan blundered alongside PBR going down river at high speed as sampan ??? into the river form a canal. The PBR crew delayed firing on NVA in water even though s??? held AK's overhead because the PBR captain couldn't decide if they were NVA or RF. Finally he ordered the crew to open fire, as the NVA swam back into the reeds along the bank. One man signalled surrender, possibly to cover for the others, who continued to swim out of sight as the PBR crew held fire. The PBR captains of the two PBR (which travel in pairs in dangerous waters) continued to fire 50 calibre machine gu??? 60 ??? M-79 grenade launchers, and small arms into the reeds, ho??? kill or wound the other NVA. The prisoner turned out to be (this after interrogation back at naval HQ) a political cadre who was taking new political lessons, about American imperialism, Saigon puppets, etc., to his boss at one of NVA regiments in Chuong Thien. He was apparently the leader of the six men in the sampan, had a wife in North Vietnam, she shown in one of the pictures in his wallet.
