Background: North Vietnamese in 14 provinces went to the polls late last month to elect a new National People's Assembly. It was the first local election hold since the January ceasefire.

In the Hanoi area, four polling stations were set up to cope with the flood of voters. The Assembly's President, Ton Due Thang, arrived at one of the stations early in the morning and was greeted by crowds of supporters.

The Assembly Chairman, Truong Chinh, who is 85 years old, voted at another station and received a similar welcome from his supporters.

Four hundred members from 566 candidates were later selected to sit in the Assembly. Forty per cent of the candidates were Labour Party members and the remaining sixty per cent comprised of teachers, workers and intellectuals. The former Assembly was more than fifty per cent Labour.
