Background: MORE THAN 1,000 PEOPLE WERE LEFT HOMELESS YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) A FIRE DESTROYED A CHINESE SQUATTER COLONY IN SINGAPORE. THE FIRE SWEPT THROUGH ROWS OF LEAF-THATCHED HOUSES, AND ALTHOUGH THERE WAS NO LOSS OF LIFE, THE FIRE IS SAID TO BE ONE OF SINGAPORE'S BIGGEST IN RECENT YEARS.

THE WIND, CHANGING DIRECTIONS FROM MINUTE TO MINUTE, SENT THE FLAMES LEAPING AND STARTED SEVERAL NEW FIRES. THE FIRE RAGED FOR MORE THAN THREE HOURS THREATENING SEVERAL OF NEARBY GOVERNMENT HOUSING FLATS. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS NOT KNOWN.

WHILE MEN AND WOMEN TRIED TO SALVAGE WHAT THEY COULD OF THEIR BELONGINGS, FIREMEN BATTLED TO BRING THE FIRE UNDER CONTROL. NEARLY A HUNDRED HOMES WERE DESTROYED AND DAMAGE IS ESTIMATED AT SEVERAL THOUSAND SINGAPORE DOLLARS.
