Senator Salvador Allende was confirmed by the Chilean Congress, on Friday (23 October), as the country's new President. Senor Allende becomes the first democratically elected Marxist President in Latin American history, and has sworn to pave the way for the establishment of a Marxist state of Chile.
The 62-year-old politician, who has made three previous unsuccessful attempts to win the presidency, received 153 votes in the congressional voting, compared with 35 for the Right-Wing Senor Jorge Alessandri, who was a close second in the public elections early last month. The Congressional voting was necessary because neither man obtained a majority of the public vote on that occasion.
Both candidates, Allende and Alessandri, and one other senator were absentees at the special session of Congress. Police and troops throughout Chile were on Constant Patrol following the earlier ambushing of General Schneider.. a lose friend of Senator Allande.. who has since died of bullet wounds.
Salvador Allende will be sworn-in as Chile's 34th President on 4th November.
