  • Description

This small hill is like hundreds of other obscure hills that break the jungle grasslands at Cam Lo just south Vietnam's hotly contested Demilitarized Zone. But to the heavily engaged Leathernecks of Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, it is both a home and a haven. It also represents a heavy military responsible in this area where infiltrating North Vietnamese often mount battalion-sized attacks against Marine forward positions.

The Marines' mission is two-fold: first, seek out and destroy the North Vietnamese; second, defend the base camp. Around Lima's Hill this creates a sustained air of immediacy to square things away and keep them that way.

When a sudden fusillade of enemy sniper bullets shatters the afternoon quiet, Marines react with pre-planned precision, quickly deploy, and direct return fire. An "Ontos" wheels into position and fires 106mm recoilless rifle rounds towards a nearby treeline. Two 81mm mortar log rounds into suspected enemy locations while Marine riflemen and machinegunners spray suppressive fire across their assigned areas. The snipers are silenced. Minutes later a detail of Leathernecks heads out through the mud and saw grass to seek out enemy positions.
