  • Description

South Vietnamese paratroopers were flown into the besieged town of An Loc, 56 miles(90 Kms) north of Saigon today(April 12), according to unconfirmed field reports reaching the capital.

The reports said the paratroopers' mission was to work their way out of the town and link up with infantry, artillery and tank units -- stalled in a northwards drive to the town along Highway 13.

More than 20,000 South Vietnamese troops are involved in the drive -- co-ordinated by United States military advisers and codenamed Task Force Bravo.

They are confronted with a large Communist force reported as holding the highway from a point about 42 miles(67 kms) north of Saigon.

As the advance continued, some troops remained in defensive positions along the strategic route to keep Highway 13 -- the only safe route from Saigon to the northeastern regions -- open.
