  • Description

The Benin Republic's First Company of Paratroopers have received another 44 members into their ranks.

SYNOPSIS: The Head of State, Lieutenant-Colonel Mathieu Kerekou, presided at the ceremony where the paratroopers were awarded their wings -- universal symbols of graduation. The paratroopers had taken part in the seventh training course to be held in the country. The ceremony, at an armed forces camp on the road to Porto-Novo, the capital, was watched by a large crowd among whom were members of the ruling Central Committee of the Popular Revolutionary Party and other members of the Government. Members of the First and Second Regiments were also on hand to witness their comrades' graduation.

The graduates then took part in an air drop to demonstrate their newly-acquired skills. President Kerekou told the new paratroopers that to graduate was not an end itself. It was only the beginning of the long road of learning the noble military career which would allow them correctly to carry out the military tasks, delegated by the Popular Revolutionary Party in the name of the Revolution and the workers of Benin.

President Kerekou also listed the qualities that the young paratroopers would have to develop. These were the clear spirit of a steely military discipline; sharp sensibility; honour and the devotion of patriotism. President Kerekou said the sublime spirit of willingness had to be developed to sacrifice--if necessary--their lives for their country. Benin's armed forces number more than 1,500 regular personnel and another 1,000 auxiliaries.

A proud day for these 44 young men joining Benin's First Company of Paratroopers.
