SINCE THE CYPRUS SITUATION WORSENED AGAIN LAST CHRISTMAS, THE GREEK NAVY HAVE BEEN PATROLLING THE SEAS NEAR THE ISLAND AND ALSO NEAR THE GREEK ISLANDS OF SAMOS, CHIOS AND MYTILENE WHICH LIE CLOSE TO THE TURKISH COAST. THIS FILM WAS SHOT A FEW DAYS AGO ABOARD THE GREEK DESTROYER "VELOS" - ONE OF THE NEWEST VESSELS IN THE FLEET. THE EXERCISES INVOLVED THE SEARCHING FOR AND TRACKING DOWN OF 'ENEMY' VESSELS. RADAR UNITS MEANWHILE SEARCHED FOR "HIDDEN" SUBMARINES.

    THE PATROLS IN THIS AREA HAVE BEEN CONSIDERABLY STEPPED UP AFTER REPORTS OF TURKISH MILITARY MANOEUVRES IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF ISKENDERUN. MORE RECENTLY IT'S BEEN REPORTED BY GREEK SOURCES THAT TURKEY IS SENDING ARMS AND MEN TO CYPRUS. THESE REPORTS HAVE BEEN DENIED BY TURKEY.
