  • Description

World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight champion, "Guts" Ishimatsu of Japan successfully defended his title on Thursday (4 December) against Costa Rica's Alvaro Rojas in Tokyo.

Ishimatsu won the fight on a knockout in the 14th round of the scheduled 15 round title bout.

The bout was Rojas' first attempt at the lightweight title.

It was Ishimatsu's fifth defence of the title since he won it from Rodolfo Gonzalez of Mexico, again on a knockout in Tokyo last year.

Rojas, the 27-year-old Central American lightweight champion, got off to a good start in the fight. His flurry of lefts and rights seemed to worry Ishimatsu by their persistence.

However, in the tenth round, Ishimatsu waded through Rojas' onslaught to force home lefts to the body and rights to the head of the challenger.

For the next four rounds both fighters attacked each other fearlessly.

The end came three minutes into the 14th round when Ishimatsu landed a right to the side of Rojas' head.

The challenger was unable to rise before the referee counted him out.
