  • Description

Leading monetary officials of the "Group of Ten" industrial nations -- among the world's richest trading powers -- today (Friday) met in Paris in an effort to hammer out a solution to the latest international monetary crisis. But there was little sign of a long-term solution to the problems created by President Nixon's measures to support the dollar last month. The 10 countries are the United States, Canada, Japan, Britain, Sweden and the European Common Market countries excluding Luxembourg. The countries will be having a further meeting, at ministerial level, in London later this month.

SYNOPSIS: Major talks on the latest world monetary crisis were held in Paris on Friday. Financial experts from the so-called "Group of Ten" industrial nations -- among the world's richest trading powers -- were holding their first meeting since President Nixon's drastic measures to support the dollar last months. The ten countries are the United States, Canada, Japan, Britain, Sweden and the European Common Market countries excluding Luxembourg. The Paris talks were to pave the way for a ministerial meeting in London later this month. Monetary officials of the ten countries discussed the full implications of the current international monetary situation, especially the massive balance of payments deficit of the United States. There were reports that the meeting discussed burden-sharing -- methods of lessening the cost of United States international commitments by sharing them among other countries. But there was little sign that the meeting was approaching any long-term solution to current monetary problems.
