• Short Summary

IN THE COMING BRITISH GENERAL ELECTIONS, FORMER SOCIALIST FOREIGN SECRETARY, MR. PATRICK GORDON WALKER, WILL?

  • Description

IN THE COMING BRITISH GENERAL ELECTIONS, FORMER SOCIALIST FOREIGN SECRETARY, MR. PATRICK GORDON WALKER, WILL BE MAKING HIS THIRD ATTEMPT AT RE-ELECTION TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS. HE LOST HIS SEAT AT THE GENERAL ELECTION 17 MONTHS AGO AND AGAIN IN A BY-ELECTION FOUR MONTHS LATER.

BRITAIN'S LABOUR PARTY WAS SHAKEN IN THE 1964 GENERAL ELECTION WHEN MR. GORDON WALKER LOST HIS PARLIAMENTARY SEAT BY NEARLY 2,000 VOTES TO A CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATE. THE CONTEST WAS FOUGHT IN SMETHWICK, IN THE MIDLAND INDUSTRIAL CITY OF BIRMINGHAM, WHICH HE HAD REPRESENTED FOR 19 YEARS.

IT IS CUSTOMARY FOR THE BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY TO BE A SITTING MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT, SO THAT HE CAN TAKE FULL PART IN DEBATES. BUT, THE PRIME MINISTERS, MR. HAROLD WILSON, IMMEDIATELY APPOINTED MR. GORDON WALKER TO THE POST, DESPITE THE FACT THAT HE HAD LOST HIS PARLIAMENTARY SEAT.

TO NORMALISE THE SITUATION, WHAT WAS CONSIDERED A "SAFE" SOCIALIST SEAT WAS FOUND FOR MR. GORDON WALKER TO FIGHT IN A BY-ELECTION.

BUT AGAIN - THIS TIME IN THE LONDON DISTRICT OF LEYTON - MR. GORDON WALKER LOST. IN THE CONTEST, A SOCIALIST MAJORITY OF NEARLY 8,000 VOTES WAS TURNED INTO A CONSERVATIVE OPPOSITION LEAD OF 205. THIS WAS REGARDED AS ONE OF THE MOST SENSATIONAL POLITICAL DEFEATS OF THE CENTURY.

SHORTLY AFTER HIS SECOND DEFEAT, MR. GORDON WALKER LEFT THE LABOUR GOVERNMENT. HE RESIGNED FROM THE FOREIGN SECRETARY APPOINTMENT.

MR. GORDON WALKER IS AGAIN SEEKING ELECTION IN LEYTON, FIGHTING MR. RONALD BUXTON, THE MAN WHO DEFEATED HIM IN JANUARY LAST YEAR.
