Background: BRITISH MOTOR CYCLISTS TODAY (SATURDAY) WON THE FIRST FULL INTERNATIONAL MOTO-CROSS MATCH ON BRITISH SOIL WHEN THEY NARROWLY DEFEATED A RUSSIAN TEAM BY ONE POINT AT SWANLEY, IN KENT. BECAUSE IT WAS A TELEVISED EVENT, TIME WAS AN IMPORTANT FACTOR - AND SO THE RACE WAS SAID TO HAVE FINISHED AFTER 16 MINUTES HAD ELAPSED.

THE CONTEST TOOK PART ON A PARTICULARLY MUDDY STRETCH OF THE KENT COUNTRYSIDE PROVIDING SOME OF THE FINEST BUMPS, BENDS AND SKID PATCHES IN ENGLAND. TAKING PART IN THE EVENT WAS 23-YEAR-OLD VICTOR ARBEKOV, A MOSCOW MOTOR MECHANIC, WHO IS THE REIGNING MOTO-CROSS WORLD CHAMPION.

ONE OF ARBEKOV'S STRONGEST OPPONENTS IN THE RACE WAS 27-YEAR-OLD DAVE BICKERS, WHO HAS DUELLED WITH ARBEKOV MANY TIMES OVER SOME OF THE TOUGHEST MOTO-CROSS COURSES IN EUROPE. BEFORE THE RACE BICKERS SAID: "WITH ARBEKOV IN THE TEAM, THE RUSSIANS MUST START FAVOURITES. IF THE RUSSIANS HAVE ONE FAULT IT IS RIDING TOO HARD AND THEY ALL TEND TO FALL. ALL EXCEPT ARBEKOV."
ARBEKOV RODE A 250 C.Z. IN THE EVENT AND BICKERS A 248 GREEVES. OF THE OTHER RIDERS SEEN ON THE FILM, C. HORSFIELD OF BRITAIN WAS RIDING A 250 C.Z., G. DRAUGS OF THE U.S.S.R. A 250 C.Z, B. GOSS OF BRITAIN A 250 HUSQVARNA, AND A. CLOUGH OF BRITAIN A 250 GREEVES. BICKERS IS A FORMER 250 C.C. WORLD CHAMPION.
