  • Description

President Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire, continuing his tour of thanks to countries which helped him crush an invasion of Zaire's mineral-rich Shaba Province, has been having two days of talks in Abidjan with Ivory Coast President Felix Houphouet-Boigny.

SYNOPSIS: President Mobutu was greeted at Abidjan Airport on Saturday (June 18) by the Ivory Coast leader and a guard of honour. President Mobutu said he wanted personally to thank President Houphouet-Boigny for his moral support given during the invasion of Shaba. After a private lunch on Sunday (19 June), the two leaders began two days of talks. Observers quoted by Reuters believe the discussions cantered on the recent war in Shaba, and the general situation in Africa in preparation for next month's opening of the Organisation of African Unity summit in Gabon. Before leaving for Togo on Monday (June 20), President Mobutu was given a state banquet and watched a performance of the Ivory Coast National Ballet. President Mobutu has already seen the leaders of France, West Germany, Morocco, and Senegal.
