FORD: "Project Interdependence will seek new ways to reduce energy usage and to increase its production. To the extent that we succeed the world will benefit, there will be much more energy available for others. The world faces a related challenge that requires a Project Interdependence."
LORD: "The President defines Project Interdependence as a global effort to increase production, reduce consumption and share equitably both the product and the cost. The golden rule, Mr. Ford said, can be profitable -- adding pointedly that it must not be usurious."
FORD: "We recognise the desires of the producers to earn a fair share or a fair price for their oil as a means of developing their own economies, but exorbitant prices can only distort the world economy, run the risk of a world-wide depression and threaten the breakdown of world order and world safety."

Background: President Ford called for an international project to develop a comprehensive world energy and resources programme when he addressed a World Energy Conference in Detroit on Monday (23 September).
Mr. Ford said the scheme would be called Project Interdependence. Its aim would be to increase energy production, eliminate waste, help the poorest countries, force a cooperative spirit to avoid conflicts over oil, and work out a global strategy on fuel prices.
He told the 3,600 delegates from 65 countries that sovereign nations cannot allow their policies to be dictated by artificial rigging of fuel prices.
The Energy Conference is the ninth this century and is a meeting of energy experts who have gathered in Detroit to discuss the world's energy situation and plan a world free from fuel worries.
