The new ??? General of the Commonwealth Shridath Ramphal, arrived in London ??? (14 July). He was gre??? his staff at Marlborough House ??? where he will preside over the ??? member organisation.
A Guyar??? Indian origin, Mr. Ramphal is the Foreign Minister and the Justice Minster of Guyana, and has been involved in Commonwealth affairs since Guyana become independent in 1966.
The 47-year??? Secretary General studied law at London University and later ??? Harvard ??? School in the United States. In the years since then he has been active in West Indies affairs.
He served as Solicitor General of British Guiana and as Attorney General of the ??? Government of the West Indies. Later he practised law in British Guiana and went on to ???come the attorney General there, too.
In that ??? he helped unite the constitution for Guyana. In 1972 he added the foreign Minster's portfolio, and in 1973 became Justice Minister as well.
During those years he also represented his country in such diverse fields as Car??? into ration, the United Nations, the movement of the non-??? nations negotiations between the African Caribbean and Pacific??? and the ??? Market, and the thee Commonwealth.
As head of the Commonwealth Mr. Ramphal will lead an organisation representative one quarter of the world's population and spanning all five ???. The commonwealth believes because of its breath it has a ??? role in trying to solve the problems of redistributing wealth between rich and ???.
At the recent Commonwealth Conference in Kingston, Jamaica, the Commonwealth set up a special committee to mark out a grand economic strategy to confront he problem. It ho??? hat it can get the Commonwealth to solidly back the committee's proposals and present them with force to the United Nations.
It's hoped the committee will ?? its report to the next Commonwealth meeting ??London the??? of August --- the first to be chaired by the new ??? General.
