  • Description

THE STARK, CONCRETE-PILLARED HALLS OF LONDON'S HAYWARD GALLERY ARE THE SETTING FOR BRITAIN'S FIRST MAJOR EXHIBITION OF POP ART, WHICH OPENS TO THE PUBLIC TOMORROW, (9 JULY).

FIFTY-THREE ARTISTS - ALL FROM BRITAIN OR THE UNITED STATES - HAVE 166 WORKS ON SHOW.

THE 'POP ART' MOVEMENT BEGAN ABOUT TEN YEARS AGO. IT DEVELOPED FROM A NUMBER OF EXISTING ARTISTIC STYLES, INCLUDING ABSTRACT, DADA, SURREALISM, AND EVEN PRE-RAPHAELITE.

THOUGH NOT BY ANY MEANS A UNIFIED MOVEMENT, IT HAS CERTAIN COMMON THEMES. ONE OF THESE IS THE REPRODUCTION OF ADVERTISING GRAPHIC ART-POSTERS, LABELS, HOARDINGS, EVEN, IN THE CASE OF ONE OF THE 'HIGH PRIESTS' OF POP, ANDY WARHOL, SOUP CANS. ANOTHER ARTIST - ROY LICHTENSTEIN - EXEMPLIFIES THE POP 'SCULPTORS' MAKE MODELS OF EVERYDAY OBJECTS - EVEN WHOLE ROOMS, COMPLETE WITH PEOPLE.

ALL THE MOST RENOWNED NAMES IN POP ART ARE REPRESENTED AT THE HAYWARD MANY OF THEM ARE AMERICAN, AND HAVE NO REAL SHOWING IN BRITAIN UNTIL NOW.

TYPICAL OF THE 'CONSTRUCTION' TYPE OF POP IS EDWARD JIENHOLZ'S HUGE 'PORTABLE WAR MEMORIAL'. LIFE-SIZED PLASTER SOLDIERS IN FULL U.S. ARMY BATTLE DRESS STRUGGLE WITH AN AMERICAN FLAG OVER A CAFE TABLE AND CHAIRS. ONE OF THE CHAIRS IS OVERTURNED, AND BEHIND STANDS - A PORTABLE WAR MEMORIAL SUITABLY LABELLED AND COVERED IN GRAFFITI. AN AMERICAN FIRST WORLD WAR RECRUITING POSTER STARES DOWN UNCOMPREHENDING ON THE SCENE. VISITORS TO THE EXHIBITION MIGHT WELL FEEL THE SAME.

ANOTHER SCULPTOR EXHIBIT IS 'MOTHER AND FATHER' TWO ROUGH FIGURES, MADE OF CANVAS, THEIR CLOTHES PAINTED ON - EXCEPT FOR FATHER'S SOCKS, WHICH SEEM TO HAVE BEEN FORGOTTEN. ONE HAS A CONVEX FACE, THE OTHER A CONCAVE ONE, WHICH PERHAPS INDICATES WHAT A PERFECT MATCH THEY MAKE.

BRITAIN'S DAVID HOCKNEY, WHO STUDIED AT LONDON'S ROYAL COLLEGE OF ART - ONE OF THE FORCING GROUNDS FOR BRITISH POP ART - AND THEN WORKED FOR FIVE YEARS IN THE UNITED STATES, HAS TWO WORKS IN THE EXHIBITION. ONE IS A TEN-FOOT CANVAS IN ACRYLIC PAINT.

ANOTHER BRITISH ARTIST - ALSO WITH A ROYAL COLLEGE OF ART TRAINING - ALLEN JONES, CONTRIBUTED A WORK WHICH COMBINED OIL ON CANVAS WITH PERSPEX TILES ON ALUMINUM - CALLED 'TWO TIMER'.

BIRMINGHAM BORN PETER PHILLIPS, WHO NOW LIVES IN SWITZERLAND SENT IN 'CUSTOM PAINTING NO. 5'.

ONE OF AMERICA'S OLDEST POP ARTISTS, RICHARD LINDNER, WHO WAS BORN IN GERMANY JUST ONE YEAR INTO THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, AND ILLUSTRATED AMERICAN MAGAZINES, SUCH AS VOGUE AND HARPER'S BAZAAR FOR MANY YEARS, HAS TWO 'BANNER' PAINTINGS IN THE SHOW.
