Background: Top international racing drivers open the European Formula One season at the Brands Hatch circuit on Sunday (18 March).
World driving champion Emerson Fittipaldi, of Brazil, heads the entry list for the "Race of Champions" over 40 laps totalling 106 miles (170.4 kilometres).
The race over the circuit in the Kent countryside is regarded as a tune-up for the next race in the 1973 drivers' world championship, the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona on April 29.
Fittipaldi will be driving the John Player Special in which he won last year's would title and leads after the first three championship races this year.
Among the internationally known drivers taking part in the race will be Denny Hulme (New Zealand), Jean-Pierre Beltoiss (France), Clay Ragazzoni (Switzerland), Mike Hailwood (Britain), Carlos Reutemann (Argentina) and Grahem Hill (Britain).
John Watson will be driving the newest car on the track -- the Brabham Ford BT42 which was still being worked on by mechanics on Friday (16 March), as other cars were getting int est laps on the course.
