  • Description

Britain's Foreign Secretary, Lord Carrington, paid tribute on Saturday (6 October) to what he called the determination of Bishop Abel Muzorewa to bring about a successful outcome to the talks being held in London on a constitution for Zimbabwe-Rhodesia. Bishop Muzorewa, Zimbabwe-Rhodesia's Prime Minister had earlier agreed to proposals put forward by Britain which would strip the country's 230,000 white minority of their veto powers in Parliament. An hour after the statement was issued, the country's former Prime Minister, Ian Smith, returned to Salisbury amid speculation that he might try to block the move to accept the plan. Lord Carrington, who has been chairing the conference, which has so far lasted a month, spoke to a reporter from Zimbabwe-Rhodesian Television.
