  • Description

LORD HUNT, LEADER OF A BRITISH RELIEF MISSION IN NIGERIA, HAS JUST COMPLETED A TOUR OF HOSPITALS AND CAMPS IN SOUTH-EASTERN NIGERIA. ON JULY 10 AND 11, LORD HUNT VISITED THE WAR-DEVASTATED AREA AROUND THE PORT OF CALABAR.

LORD HUNT MADE THE TRIP TO EVALUATE HOW MUCH FOOD AND MEDICINE THE STARVING POPULATION WOULD NEED TO SURVIVE. IT HAS BEEN CONSERVATIVELY ESTIMATED THAT 600-THOUSAND CIVILIANS FACE STARVATION AS FIGHTING BETWEEN THE FEDERAL NIGERIAN FORCES AND THE BIAFRANS UNDER COLONEL OJUKWU CONTINUES. THE INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS HAS MOVED INTO THE CALABAR AREA AND A RELIEF TEAM OF DOCTORS AND NURSES IS HELPING MEMBERS OF THE NIGERIAN RED CROSS.

LORD HUNT AND HIS PARTY, WHICH INCLUDED THE NIGERIAN COMMISSIONER FOR REHABILITATION MR. OMO-BARE, VISITED A PRISONER-OF-WAR CAMP IN THE CALABAR AREA. LORD HUNT TOOK THE OPPORTUNITY TO TALK TO A MEMBER OF THE BIAFRAN PRISONERS. HE ASKED THEM IF THEY HAD A COMPLAINTS AND AFTERWARDS RECOMMENDED TO MR. OMO-BARE THAT THEY BE GIVEN A DAILY RATION OF CIGARETTES. THE VISIT TO THE CAMP CAME SHORTLY AFTER AN OFFICIAL BIAFRAN ANNOUNCEMENT THAT COLONEL OJUKWU WAS WILLING TO COOPERATE WITH ANY BODY SUCH AS THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY IN BRINGING A CEASE-FIRE TO THE CIVIL WAR.

LORD HUNT ALSO VISITED A REFUGEE CENTRE NEAR CALABAR DURING HIS EASTERN NIGERIAN TRIP. MANY OF THE INMATES WERE WOMEN AND CHILDREN, SOME OF WHOM WERE SUFFERING FROM MALNUTRITION. AS THE RESULT OF HIS TRIP. LORD HUNT LATER RECOMMENDED THE IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION OF GBP250-THOUSAND STERLING'S WORTH OF EMERGENCY FOOD AND MEDICAL AID. THE RED CROSS SAID THAT FOUR TONES OF RELIEF SUPPLIES WERE BEING SHIPPED TO CALABAR FROM LAGOS. THE CONSIGNMENT, WHICH IS THE LARGEST SINGLE SHIPMENT SINCE CURRENT MERCY OPERATIONS BEGAN, IS BEING MOVED BY A COASTAL FREIGHTER. REPORTS OF EMERGENCY AID AND PERSONNEL ARE POURING IN FROM ALL OVER EUROPE TO HELP THE STRICKEN REFUGEES. AND THE NIGERIAN FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS ANNOUNCED THAT IT HAS EARMARKED GBP850-THOUSAND STERLING FOR RELIEF AND REHABILITATION OF THE CIVILIAN VICTIMS OF THE CIVIL WAR.
