Background: A MATCH BETWEEN AMATEUR SOCCER TEAMS FROM THE SOVIET UNION AND JAPAN ENDED IN A TWO-ALL DRAW AT TOKYO'S OLYMPIC STADIUM YESTERDAY (SATURDAY). ENGAGED IN THE STRUGGLE OF SKILL WERE AN ALL JAPAN TEAM AND THE SOVIET ARMY CENTRAL CLUB.

MORE THAN 20,000 SPECTATORS TURNED OUT TO SEE THE MATCH WHICH WAS ARRANGED BY THE JAPAN SOCCER ASSOCIATION AND A JAPANESE NEWSPAPER.

THE SOVIET TEAM HAS A FORMIDABLE REPUTATION HAVING DEFEATED TEAMS FROM AUSTRIA, YUGOSLAVIA, ENGLAND, FRANCE AND CZECHOSLOVAKIA. OUT OF A TOTAL OF 660 MATCHES THEY HAVE LOST ONLY 156 WITH 160 MATCHES DRAWN.

IT WAS A REPUTATION THAT SEEMED WELL DESERVED AS THE SOVIET SIDE QUICKLY OPENED THE SCORING WITH A GOAL IN THE FIRST FEW MINUTES OF THE GAME.

THE JAPANESE FOUGHT BACK AND JUST BEFORE HALF TIME THEY MANAGED TO EQUALISE.

THE SECOND HALF SOON BROUGHT JAPAN ANOTHER GOAL BUT THEIR LEAD WAS SHORT LIVED AS THE SOVIET TEAM CAME BACK TO MAKE THE SCORE TWO-ALL. AND THAT WAS THE WAY THE SCORE STAYED.

THE VISITING SOVIET TEAM IS TO TOUR JAPAN FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS PLAYING TEAMS IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE COUNTRY.
