  • Description

Pele, Brazil's world-famous "King of Football" played his last professional game on Wednesday (2 October).

Pele played only 21 minutes of a game for his club, Santos. He had injured his thigh three days before and although his fans knew he would only play for a short time, 30,000 of them turned up.

Pele -- real name, Edson Arantes do Nascimento -- ended one of the greatest football careers by kneeling on the centre of the pitch. He then turned to the four sides of the arena where his triumphant career began 18 years ago and the crowd went wild.

No other professional footballer has scored as many goals as the Brazilian superstar of the pitch: 1,216 in 1,254 games.

He was a member of the Brazilian teas that won the World Cup on three occasions.

Pele said he was retiring to oversee the business interests he has built up during his lucrative career.

His club, Santos (even without the legendary player), continued Wednesday's game to beat their opponents, Ponte Preta, by two goals to nil.

SYNOPSIS: The game continued without the Superstar who said he'd be taking t ten-day holiday and then settling down to look after the business interests he acquired during his lucrative career.

Pele said he might play some benefit matches in the future. But his days as a professional are over. Yet Santos seem to have learned well enough -- as the result of the match against Ponte Preta shows.
