  • Description

Drivers in the rugged R.A.C. rally through some of the most difficult roads in the United Kingdom, entered an even more difficult stage on Tuesday (November 23) -- a special section through the Esholt Sewage Farm, near the Midlands town of Bradford.

With less than a day to go, young Swedish driver Stig Blomqvist, driving a Saab was still leading, closely followed by Finnish ace Timo Makinen in a Datsun.

The latest diversion was caused through part of the original course being abandoned because of bad weather.

SYNOPSIS: With less than a day to go in the gruelling R.A.C. motor rally, drivers on Tuesday were diverted through one of their most difficult routes of the event. Because bad weather caused the rally to be diverted from some of the planned roads in Northern England, the organisers re-routed the field through a sewage works near the Midlands town of Bradford.

The tricky course past the sewage tanks and the slippery road conditions force the drivers skills to the utmost.

The overnight snow, which later turned to slush appeared to suit the British drivers most.

Russell Brookes in a Mini-Cooper had the third best time and a Datsun driven by Tony Falls was second.

The Saab driven by Sweden's Stig Blomqvist wasn't among the leaders through this section but he was still leading the field on points.
