  • Description

Cyclists from all over the world took part in a 10-stage international race in Chile this week.

SYNOPSIS: Twenty-eight cyclists from West Germany, Argentina, Belgium, Colombia, Spain, U.S.A., Italy and Chile took part. The competition was organised by the "El Mercurio" newspaper.

The race started outside the "El Mercurio" building in Santiago, and the 1,570 kilometres (about 986 miles) were covered in 10 stages. The first stage of 122 kilometres (nearly 76 miles) was through the towns of Rancugua to Coya, El Tentiente.

Enthusiastic crowds gathered to cheer the riders on. By San Bernado there was already a build-up as the leaders jostled for places. The ten stages of the route which take the cyclists down the length of Chile, are arranged so that some of the most testing mountain cycling will come in the last stages.

But even in this stage, the last 25 kilometres (15.5 miles) will be a testing climb up hilly roads to Coya. Other than that the only other hazards expected on this stage were the high winds in the open country.
