  • Description

The South Korean Government has proclaimed two southern counties cholera-infected following the death of seven people last week. The two infected counties have been sealed off, but despite all-out anti-epidemic efforts by the authorities the disease is still spreading at a relatively fast pace to other areas.

The Red Cross and local volunteers are working day and night vaccinating people against possible contraction of cholera and hospitals are overcrowded with those already laid-up by the disease.

In Chang Nyong County, worst hit by the disease, emergency hospitals have been set up in schools and mobile Red Cross vans are calling at each village to administer vaccinations. Further precautions against the disease are being taken by spraying disinfectant along the streets and over buildings in the quarantined areas.

Korean Health Minister Tai-Dong Kim said his Government is reporting to the World Health Organisation that both Changnyong and Miryang counties near the southern port of Pusan are infected by the El Tor type of cholera. This is the same type of cholera that broke out in south-western coastal areas last year killing 137 of a total 1,538 people affected.
