  • Description

HISTORIC FILM OF THE "WALK IN SPACE" BY THE UNITED STATES ASTRONAUT, MAJOR EDWARD WHITE, CLEARLY SHOWS HIM EMERGING FROM THE GEMINI IV SPACECRAFT AND HOVERING AT THE END OF HIS 25-FOOT GOLD-PLATED LIFELINE. BEHIND HIM CAN BE SEEN THE CURVATURE OF THE EARTH, REVOLVING QUICKLY AS THE SPACECRAFT SPEEDS AROUND IT AT FIVE MILES (EIGHT KILOMETRES) A SECOND.

THE FILM OF MAJOR WHITE, TAKEN AT THE SLOW SPEED OF SIX FRAMES A SECOND, WAS SHOT BY AN AUTOMATIC CAMERA WHICH WHITE ATTACHED TO THE SPACECRAFT BEFORE HE STEPPED OUT. DURING HIS "WALK IN SPACE", THE ASTRONAUT MOVED HIMSELF ABOUT WITH SPURTS OF OXYGEN FROM A "SPACEGUN".

MAJOR WHITE LEFT HIS SPACE CRAFT AS IT PASSED OVER CALIFORNIA. CLEARLY SEEN IN THE FILM IS THE OPEN HATCH OF THE GT-4 CAPSULE AT LOWER SCREEN RIGHT. WHITE IS SEEN UNFOLDING HIS "LIFELINE" FROM ITS BAG. THE LINE ALSO CARRIED OXYGEN AND COMMUNICATION LINES. AT ONE POINT, A GLOVE FLOATED OUT THROUGH THE OPEN HATCH AND VANISHED INTO SPACE, PRESUMABLY TO BECOME A SATELLITE OF THE EARTH.

ONCE THE LINE WAS UNPACKED, WHITE PUT IT OUT INTO SPACE AHEAD OF HIM AND THEN JUMPED OFF. HE FLOATED AWAY FROM THE SPACE CRAFT, USING HIS SPACE GUN. THE LAND MASSES SEEN BELOW THE CLOUD COVER ON THE EARTH AT INTERVALS HAVE NOT BEEN POSITIVELY IDENTIFIED. THAT SHOWN TOWARDS THE LATTER PART OF THE FILM IS PROBABLY THE EASTERN COAST OF NORTH AMERICA. ALSO CLEARLY VISIBLE AT INTERVALS IN THE FILM ARE THE AMERICAN FLAG ON MAJOR WHITE'S SHOULDER AND THE COMPLEX CHEST PACK HE WORE, CONTAINING EMERGENCY OXYGEN SUPPLIES. AS HE MOVED, MAJOR WHITE TALKED EXCITEDLY OVER THE RADIO TO HIS COMPANION AND COMMANDER OF THE SPACECRAFT, MAJOR JAMES MCDIVITT, INSIDE THE CRAFT.

MAJOR WHITE SPENT 20 MINUTES IN SPACE. HE REPORTED LATER THAT HIS SPACEGUN WAS "QUITE EFFECTIVE" BY THAT ITS LOW CAPACITY WAS NOT ENOUGH FOR "PLAYING AROUND".

MAJOR WHITE SAID HE HAD NO SENSATION OF FEAR AS HE BEGAN HIS WALK IN SPACE. WHEN MAJOR MCDIVITT ORDERED HIM TO RETURN TO THE CAPSULE, MAJOR WHITE SAID: "THIS IS THE SADDEST MOMENT OF MY LIFE." MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS SHOW THAT NEITHER OF THE TWO ASTRONAUTS SUFFERED ILL EFFECTS FROM THEIR FOUR DAY IN SPACE.

THE FILM OF MAJOR WHITE IN SPACE WAS TAKEN IN COLOUR. BEING FILMED AT SLOW SPEED, IT GIVES A SENSE OF GREAT SPEED OF THE EARTH'S ROTATION. A BLACK AND WHITE FILM WAS TAKEN FROM INSIDE THE CAPSULE, ALONG WITH STILL PHOTOGRAPHS. SCIENTISTS AT THE MANNED-SPACECRAFT CENTRE IN HOUSTON, TEXAS, WERE OVERJOYED BY THE FILM, PARTICULARLY BECAUSE OF ITS REMARKABLE CLARITY.
